Coryell, The Younger
Warmdaddy's, Wed. and Thurs., Mar. 6 and 7, 8:30, 10 and ll:30p.m.,
$5.
With Larry Coryell, the great fusion guitarist, for a father,
one might expect Murali Coryell to mine the same experimental
jazzrock vein. Yet, if anything, the 26-yearold singer/guitarist
seems more interested in the blues and soul roots of his dad's
music.
Wiith an understated, economical style of playing and a voice
reminiscent of Otis Redding orTyrone Davis, Coryell performs a
smooth, slinky brand of soul that recalls Curtis Mayfield's big
records of the early '70s.
Expect lots of guitar work at his shows, as well as selections
from his debut Eyes Wide Open (Big Mo). Coryell
might even play a song or two by the Fabulous Thunderbirds, with
whose guitarist, Duke Robillard, he has toured extensively. (Ramsay
Pennypacker)
